So you have had a hearing test and learned that you have a hearing loss, but for a number of reasons you can't go for hearing aids at present. What can you do? Here are some options to consider. The effectiveness of these suggested alternatives will vary depending on your lifestyle and the situations you typically encounter.
Some audio devices can help improve your ability to hear and function in some situations. E.g. if the TV is a main issue, there are headphones that can be directly connected with the TV. Some headphones are bluetooth enabled so you need not have wires trawling across the living carpet. Sound bars could be implemented. Subtitles could be considered but they have their limitations with live TV shows.
There are remote microphone systems which can help one focus on sounds you want to hear. Phone features like "Live Listen" on iphone. Phone app transcribers can present speech as text in real time. Such transcribers can write down the speech that one is trying to hear. Some mobile phones come with additional microphones that can transmit the collected sound into your phone's ear-buds at louder levels. (Always advise caution when considering volume control levels on the phone)
There are auditory training programs. Some are delivered in person by audiologists. Some are available as apps. LACE, Amptify are some examples.
Lip-reading groups, can be helpful from a social perspective and equip one with helpful communication skills.
Looking after one's health can benefit your hearing. Taking care of your mind and body helps. Stress, depression, anxiety can affect how the brain processes sound. Other health conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain and sleep apnoea can have an additional effect on already existing hearing difficulties.
