Custom hearing protection are ear moulds or plugs made specifically for your own ears alone. The custom ear moulds can serve different purposes from Music, Sleep, Swimming, Shooting & More. They can come with special filters with different strengths to change the level of environmental sounds one is exposed to. When you arrive for your appointment. We welcome you and ensure you are comfortable. Then we have a discussion to find out about your hearing needs, your concerns and your preferences. For example: If you swim, are you swimming recreationally or competitively. What durability do you require from your custom swimming moulds.
Or perhaps you want hearing protection because you work in a noisy factory, or maybe you like to shoot over the weekends. Having this discussion helps us narrow down to your specific needs and offer the best recommendation for hearing protection. After we have decided on the type of hearing protection, we shall go on to take the ear impression.
We carry out an ear examination to ensure your canal is clear of wax or abnormalities. We discuss your medical history to help us prepare in advance and take necessary precautions, e.g If there is ear wax-build up, we can remove the ear wax for you before taking the ear impressions, allergies, operations etc. Afterwards:
A soft foam block is placed inside the ear canal to protect your eardrum.
You may be asked to bite down on a bite-block to capture your jaw’s natural position—important for tight-fitting plugs like swimming moulds.
We mix up the base and catalyst ear impression material. This is silicone based. Then fill up a tube (very similar to a cake piping syringe!) with both components and insert the material into your ear-canal.
After 2–4 minutes, the impression sets and is removed—ready to be used for your custom product.

If you are only wishing to pay for the ear impressions then we shall give you the impressions on the day to send to your supplier after receiving payment.
If you have ordered custom noise protection plugs or moulds. We can carry out an additional service of verifying the amount of sound the noise protection plugs are reducing. This is called Hearing Protection Fit Testing.
We provide Hearing Protection Fit Testing for hearing protector devices that aim to reduce sound. Just like one may want to verify the miles per gallon MPG on a car. A hearing protection fit test is carried out to make sure that the ear protection is reducing sound efficiently at the frequencies specified by the manufacturer.
We would need a manufacturer report on noise reduction (attenuation) to check if the hearing protection matches up to test results as expected. The hearing protection fit test can be a useful means of verification for anyone in an industry encountering loud levels of work e.g. noise from the construction trade, noise from factories etc.
Hearing protection fit test calculates a Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) which is an estimation of the noise reduction obtained across test frequencies in one or both ears expressed as a single number.
The hearing protection fit test can be done 2 ways at Sonant Hearing Clinic, Kent.
1.) We can check your hearing thresholds at various frequencies whilst you are sat in a quiet sound proof booth using headphones alone and then with the custom hearing protection in your ears, Just like you would do with a hearing test, this time with or without the hearing protection. The time to conduct this can take around 15-20 minutes.
2.) Here we present sound to your ears from a speaker in front of you, then insert a small microphone into your ears. We measure the sound in your ears not occluded and open, and then measure the sound in your ears occluded with the custom hearing protection. We compare the difference between the two results (Personal Attenuation Rating - PAR) to the manufacturer's specification. This method is more involved but doesn't rely on feedback from the user. This can take around 20-30minutes to perform.
It typically takes 15-20 minutes to take the impression itself. Additional time maybe needed to examine the ear and discuss requirements prior.
Ear impressions are typically painless. It goes quiet whilst the ears are full of the impression material and when the material is set and removed, the hearing returns back to how it was prior.
No, this is not advisable as the impression material shape can be distorted by the wax taking up space within the ear. The wax may also be pushed forward down the ear canal by the impression material as it takes up space within the ear. We can perform ear wax removal if needed prior.
It would not be recommended to have ear impressions taken when your ears are sore. We would advise that you see your doctor and return when the soreness has resolved.
We partner with trusted names like ACS, Ultimate Ears, Minerva, Snugs, CENS, Aqua-shield and Starkey to deliver the highest quality custom products.
